Jake lay awake a long time, carrying on a debate with himself that could easily and appropriately be entitled “The Pros and Cons of a Personal Relationship with Your Boss’s Daughter.”

No matter how many pros he came up with, though, one con seemed to stand out as though highlighted in neon: personal relationships were damnably unpredictable things, and even if he and Carly got serious and Stuart was pleased about it, something could go wrong at the last minute and ruin everything. Who knew better than he that a woman could change her mind about a man five minutes before the nuptials?

And that would be the end of his job and the way of life he’d worked so hard to attain here at Wild Horse Ranch.

If it was cowardly of him not to want to take that risk, then he was a sniveling coward, Jake thought with no small amount of bitterness. Punching his pillow, he forced his thoughts to better days, to those tranquil weeks, months and years before Carly Paxton had gotten off that helicopter.

Would life ever be the same again? Would he ever find that wonderful tranquillity again? Would he be able to sit peacefully on the porch on summer nights, listen to and absorb the quiet and think of work schedules and ranch projects instead of Carly’s body?

Cursing violently, Jake threw back the covers, got off the bed and went to a window, where he looked out at the yard lights and what could be seen of the buildings. A massive melancholy suddenly overcame him, and he felt tears sting his eyes.

How could he have been such a fool as to open this particular can of worms? Damn!
